Yoga in Montezuma, Costa Rica

While the west coast of Costa Rica is known for its organic and health conscious culture it is with no surprise that you can find an abundance of yoga places here. And as you have the tropics on your doorstep they are often in amazing environments.

Ylang Ylang yoga – at this resort in the middle of the tropics they have built a spacious yoga deck on top of the main restaurant. By doing so they lifted it up from the bushy surroundings and therewith provide a perfect sea view. With the sound of the ocean in the background they offer yoga at least two times a day, at 8am and 4.30pm, each classes of 1.5 hours. Ciska was my teacher and took me through a Vinyasa flow yoga class in the afternoon. And in the morning I got a session with Erika who also teaches at Montezuma yoga. This was also a vinyasa class. They also offer Hatha, Kundalini, and Yoga Dance fusion classes.

Montezuma Yoga – at Hotel los Mangos in the middle of town, a team of yoga teachers offer a morning and evening yoga class. While I didn’t have a chance to go myself some of my class enjoyed yoga here with Sylvia and really appreciated it. They praised the yoga place, the class they joined and the sound of the ocean as their comforting support.

Anamaya yoga retreat – a bit more up at the hill, outside from town Anamaya yoga retreat offers a great program for a weeks yoga and surf. You can take both or either while staying at the retreat. You need to book at least a week which starts each Saturday. The teachers vary per week and I had the pleasure to take classes with Ted and Kelly, who run a yoga studio in the US and come out for a week each year to teach here. Classes are at 7.30am in the morning and 5.30pm in the afternoon. I enjoyed the Nidra, Hatha, and Vinyasa classes but also took a workshop meditation and aerial yoga in addition to the standard program. Don’t forget to get up at least once in the morning to watch the sunrise from the main yoga deck, you will love it. With a great infinity pool, the best chef serving organic food and these superb yoga classes I had a wonderful week.
