Swimming in one of the wonderful lakes that you can find in Finland, lake Lohja, why would you not opt for that?! Certainly if you are swimmers like me and my sister, and you have done long distance swimming in Cornwall, in The Thames, and in lake Shepperton amongst others. So when we saw a tweet about ‘Swimming like a local in Finland’ we investigated a bit and soon signed up for a long weekend of swimming.
We flew into Helsinki and made our way to Lohja on a Thursday where the lovely Païvi from Swimming Holidays in Finland picked us up. Another half hour ride through the amazing scenery of Finland and we got to a nice cottage on Lake Lohja. And while it was still a few hours till sunset we jumped in the water and enjoyed a 2.5k swim.
The next day Tuomas, a long distance swimmer who had an impressive swimming CV with a 60k swim, the canal swim and a winter swim, joined us to look after us from a boat while we were swimming. We did a 4.2k swim passing amazing scenery under a blue sky and mid 20 temperatures. The water was about 21 degrees, so pretty nice. Returning from the swim, we had our private chef Pia, one of Païvi’s friends, prepare a typical Finnish warm lunch for us.
The following day we did a 5k swim, and another 4k on Sunday, and of course after each swim we had a steamy visit to the Finnish sauna in our cottage. If not swimming we checked out the local farmers market with organics products, went for a bicycle ride to the other side of the island, or chilled in the sun to recover (!) from our swims.
We had the best time in the most quiet place, while enjoying good food, the beautiful landscape, some friendly people and not to forget these swims in Lake Lohja. I can suggest this to anybody when you want to get away for a weekend from all the stress of hectic business life…
